Vienna Improvisers Orchestra

General Information

Year of Foundation:  2005

The Vienna Improvisers Orchestra, founded by Michael Fischer in 2005, is dedicated to instant composition conductions (or, momentary compositions that are communicated to the orchestra from the conductor through a series a hand signs) and is unique in Austria. It is a method for improvisational orchestras that has been developed in various European cities since the 1970’s-

The VIO unites singers/musicians from the acoustic and electro-accoustic improvisation, jazz, and famous ensembles like the Ensemble XX. Jahrhundert, Tonkünstler NÖ,  and the Klangforum Wien. Over 140 artists and musicians have taken part in ensembles consisting of anywhere between 14 and 22 artists of various formations. In addition the VIO organises projects with choirs and musicians on location in cooperation with promoters and festivals. Following their experimental  and genre breaking approach, the Vienna Improvisers Orchestra has collaborated in the past with a diverse range of personalities. For their focus on experimental lyric for example they worked with Gerhard Ruhm (1930*, Wiener Gruppe), Gerhard Jaschke, Magdalena Knapp-Menzel and many others.

"Explosive Litaneien", "ich spreche nicht : illusionsgebiet nervenruh", "Völkische Kunst statt Zwiebeldunst” and other titles provide an idea of the program direction the VIO follows in the creation of their spontaneous creative collaborations between orchestra and director. Locations of performances: Porgy & Bess, Radiokulturhaus, OffenesHausOberwart, Festival artacts, Festival Gugginger Irritationen, SohoInOttakring, Aktionsradius Augarten, WUK etc.
