Description of Style

Arturo Fuentes' music is characterized as a meticulously organized kaleidoscopic chaos that explores the frontiers of dynamics, color, texture and virtuosity. Almost sculptural he lets the sound shimmer between foreground and background and creates a sound-space that is covered by constant agitation.

"Often I think the shape of my music is like a walk through a maze. I'm losing the thread of my musical discourse and pick it up again after many turns. In a maze, each step is characterized by great uncertainty and our orientation gets confused by the similarity of walls. Something like that happens when I compose."

Press Reviews

17. April 2012

Fuentes' alluring "Liquid Crystals". Mr. Fuentes, a Mexican-born composer living in Austria, has created intriguing sonic landscapes in this work, which opens with the strings playing in the highest register. The eerie, glassy harmonics ebbed and flowed into colorful, crystalline waves of sound and increased in intensity toward the work’s conclusion, which sometimes evoked electronic music. The ensemble vividly illuminated the shifting soundscapes.
