Akademischer Orchesterverein in Wien

General Information

The Akademischer Orchesterverein (AOV) is one of the oldest amateur orchestras of Vienna. Since its inception in 1904, the AOV has evolved over the decades into a large symphonic orchestra.

Before the Second World War, it was Ferdinand Grossmann who led the orchestra to its first artistic highlights. After 1945 the orchestra was influenced by Hans Swarovsky, Karl Österreicher and Karl Etti. Since his first concert with the AOV in 1957, Prof. Wolfgang Gabriel was the artistic director for almost 50 years and in this time has brought the orchestra to the level of recognition it has today. In January 2007 Christian Birnbaum was ordered as the chief conductor of the AOV.

Every year six to eight programs of symphonic literature, as well as solo recitals and choral-orchestral works, are rehearsed and then performed at the Vienna Musikverein, the Konzerthaus and in various churches.
