General Information

Year of Foundation:  1958


The ensemble "die reihe" was founded in 1958 by Friedrich Cerha and Kurt Schwertsik and is one of the most traditional ensembles for contemporary music in Europe. Since its inception, it has always championed for the presentation of contemporary music and has created a permanent forum for the avant-garde in the Austrian music scene. The musical range of the ensemble includes the main chamber music of all styles since 1900, whereas the Second Viennese School, that is, the creation of Schoenberg, Berg and Webern, forms a major thematic focus. Special emphasis has always placed on artistic creation after 1945.

Since the early sixties, the ensemble "die reihe" has not only been organizing its own concert series in Vienna, but is regularly among the leading international avant-garde festivals (Wien Modern, Bruckner Festival, Hörgänge Vienna, Salzburg Festival, Vienna Festival, the Bregenz Festival, Berlin Festival, Donaufestival, Holland Festival, Warsaw Autumn, Styrian Autumn, Venice Biennales and Zagreb, Musica Viva Munich, Musik der Zeit Cologne, Neues Werk Hamburg, Nutida Music Stockholm, Accademia Filarmonica Rome, etc.). Guest appearances in the United States , England, Portugal, Spain, Hungary, Russia, Finland and China, among other countries, complete the international artistic work.

1983 - 2009 was influenced by HK Gruber as the artistic director of the ensemble, which mainly consists of members of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. Since 2010, the internationally acclaimed artist HK Gruber and Christian Muthspiel are the "Artistic Partners" of the ensemble. Since the founding of the ensemble, the musicians of “die reihe" regularly work with the most demanding guest conductors such as Arturo Tamayo, Dennis Russell Davies, John Cage, Nicholas Cleobury, Ernst Krenek, Mathias Rüegg, Kurt Schwertsik, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Stefan Soltesz, Erich Urbanner, Kasper de Roo, Henry Brant, Peter Keuschnig, Robert Lehrbaumer, Peter Rundel, Erwin Ortner, Gottfried Rabl, Maria Bonaventura, Johannes Kalitzke, Alexander Drcar, Ernst Theis, among others.

In its course of existence, the ensemble "die reihe" is also particularly proud of working with outstanding soloists such as Edita Gruberova, Maurizio Pollini, Alfons & Aloys Kontarsky, Ernst Kovacic, Benjamin Schmid, Thomas Larcher, Paul Armin Edelmann, Timna Brauer, Barbara Hölzl, Alexander Jenner, Marjana Lipovsek, Thomas Christian, Christine Whittlesey, Dennis Russell Davies, Marie-Thérèse Escribano, Julie Moffat, Edith Lienbacher, Roland Batik, William Pearson, Robert Lehrbaumer, Wolfgang Schulz, Hans Kann, Ludwig Streicher, Otto M. Zykan, HK Gruber, Mia Zabelka and Heinrich Schiff.
