Duo :nota bene:

General Information

Violinist Eva Steinschaden and pianist Alexander Vavtar founded the Duo :nota bene: in 1996.

The two musicians, who both graduated from the Mozarteum University and are teachers of their instruments, have concentrated primarily on music of the Viennese Classical school, focusing also on the modern period and particularly on contemporary music.

In 1999, the Duo was the only Austrian ensemble to be accepted into the master class of the Trio di Trieste. Since then, they have worked with the world-famous musicians of the Trio di Trieste at the Scuola Superiore di Musica da Camera del Trio di Trieste in Duino/Italy.

To date, they have recorded six CDs, all under the Viennese Extraplatte label, and including works by Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Xaver Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Granados, Ravel, Webern, Schnittke, Bresgen, Lutosławski, Penderecki, Kurtág, Pärt, Vereno, Nussbichler and Kardeis.

Lineup/Description of Style

Band/Ensemble MemberInstrument

The Duo :nota bene: is distinguished from other chamber ensembles primarily by its programmes and its interest in and commitment to modern and contemporary music. Detailed study of 20th-century music and personal contact with many noted composers of our time has also a stimulating influence on the interpretation of works by the great old masters. This is impressively borne out by the Duo's CDs and by many press reviews.

The two musicians' years of collaboration have contributed to the development of a sound and style of chamber-music playing often lacking in the duo formation. Prolonged periods of work with the world-famous Trio di Trieste have also had a lasting influence. At the start of the 21st century, the Duo :nota bene: seeks to break down antiquated structures, to awaken interest in new ideas and, through its social commitment, to keep alive the love of all styles and periods of good music.
