General Information

Year of Foundation:  1991

TRANSIT is an art society with out a home, their area of activity is in Innsbruck. They realise art projects in locations chosen by the artist, in art spaces, in public spaces, and in the non-spaces of telecommunications media. In art-discussions, lectures, symposiums, and publications, TRANSIT attempts to provide a theoretical accompaniment to the art projects. TRANSIT isn’t meant to be a festival, it is much more about providing artists, theoreticians, and audiences with a long-term confrontation with the specific problematic of making art in a electronic/digital space possible.

TRANSIT takes advantage of a media art practice that has a long (since the 1970’s) tradition in Austria. Radio, television, HAM radio, BTX, fax, slow scan TV, videoconferencing systems, email and video telephones have all been used as objects and locations for art

1993: special mention at the Ars Electronica for the project "Chip Radio"

1994: award from the Ars Electronica in the category "interactive art" for the project “REALTIME”
