The Deutsche Oper Berlin is one of the largest of the three opera houses in Berlin. the new building was opened in 1961 and was a replacement for the Deutsche Oper building in the same location which was destroyed in the second world war. The house in Charlottenberg has 1859 seats making it one of the largest in Germany.

The Deutsche Oper, together with the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, the Komischen Oper, the Staatsballett and the Bühnenservice Berlin make up the Opera Foundation (Stiftung Oper )in Berlin.

Aside from contemporary works and the performance of well known “classics” the Deutsche Oper Berlin also places a focus on composers whose body of works are no longer well represented in repertoires. The orchestra of the Deutschen Oper Berlin counts among the best orchestras in the country. Outside of opera evenings it can also be heard as part of the Musikfest Berlin, at gala concerts in the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and at the BBC Proms. The well known choir has been named “Choir of the Year” many times due to its excellent performances.
