Berlin University of the Arts

General Information

The Universität der Künste Berlin (UdK Berlin, until 2001 Hochschule der Künste Berlin) is the largest arts university in Europe. Its history reaches back to a foundation by Friedrich III. in 1696 as the Kurfürstliche Academie der Mahler-, Bildhauer- und Architectur-Kunst (later Preußische Akademie der Künste) which makes it one of the oldest schools of its kind. The smallest of the four universities in Berlin developed over 150 years from the step by step merger of various educational institutions for music, architecture, painting and design.
