General Information

Year of Foundation:  2005

Studio Dan is a formation run by Daniel Riegler that has been getting a lot of attention since it’s founding in 2005. Their exceptional interweaving of new music and contemporary jazz has particularly excited their fans. Studio Dan doesn't rely on a shallow mix of styles, but rather incorporates the essence of various musical approaches into their own in order to create refreshingly new results.

The name of the 17 member ensemble is derived from the 1979 Frank Zappa album Studio Tan, which serves as a representation of his entire work and is an important starting point for the project. The colourful instrumentation and the improvisational skills of the musicians allows experimental freedom at the boundaries of free and organised improvisation, jazz and new music. The ensemble is made up of musicians from the young Austrian jazz scene as well as sought after instrumentalists from the new music scene. The result is the best possible combination to do justice to the demands of young contemporary music.

Aside from regular concerts at Porgy & Bess in Vienna, the ensemble has also performed at festivals such as the Jazzfest Berlin, the Zappanale in Bad Doberan or at Kampnagel in Hamburg. Studio Dan consistently produces and curates new programs, concert series, and CD’s and also works as coproducer with large institutions like 21er Haus, Wien Modern or KinderKinder/Big Bang. Some of their guest soloists and cooperation partners have been musicians like Vinko Globokar, Elliott Sharp, Michel Doneda or Friedrich Cerha. The ensemble has been supported multiple times from the Ernst von Siemens Music foundation.

Awards:

  • 2011: Support from the Ernst-von-Siemens-Music-Foundation for their work with the New York guitarist and saxophonist Elliott Sharp
  • 2009: "Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik" for their debut CD "Creatures & other stuff"
