Sam Auinger was born in Linz in 1956 and grew up there. Since the 1990s, he has been working and living in Berlin. In the late 1970s, he was singer, song-writer and saxophone player in the Rock and Punk scene. From the 1980s onwards, Auinger became more interested in compositions, focusing on sound design, computer music and psycho-acoustics. In 1989 he founded "o+a" together with Bruce Odland, designing and building several sound installations. Together with Rupert Huber - they both received the scholarship by the German Academic Exchange Service in 1997- he launched the project "berliner theorie". Other co-operations with choreographer Marguerite Donlon (several dance productions, such as at the State Theatre Saarland) and Claas Willeke, Hannes Strobl (tamtatm, stadtmusik), Dietmar Offenhuber (stadtmusik) etc. Sam Auinger created the sound design for several museums and exhibitions. His installations, performances and multi-media projects have already been presented at film, music and art festivals throughout Europe and the USA.

I wanna be more serious, wanna get over the "tralla, tralla" ............................. dann .................. Beschäftigung mit Komposition, Psychoakustik und Sounddesign ................ Bewegung macht Sound ....... Räume und Material haben einen Klang ..................... mein Herz schlägt einen Rhythmus ................. I wanna get close to my dreams ......................
Sam Auinger 1996

Is there really a song slumbering in all things and have Odland and Auinger found Eichendorff's diviner-rod with their turned pipe? Well, it's not that easy. You need a lot of time to make these sound experiences in the green "box 30/70"; you need a lot of discipline to give sustainability to this new eco-acoustic sensitivity and to let it follow an altered social acting. Of course, Auinger knows that. But for him it is first about freeing and reviving the ancient knowledge of the relation between sound and habitat Europe has possessed over many centuries.
