Sam Auinger was born and raised in Linz. Since the nineties he has been living and working in Berlin. In the late 1970s, he was active as a singer, songwriter and saxophone player in the rock and punk scene. From the 1980s onwards, Auinger became more interested in compositions focusing on sound design, computer music and psycho-acoustics.
In 1989 he founded "o+a" together with Bruce Odland, where he realized numerous sound installations. Together with Rupert Huber - both received a scholarship by the German Academic Exchange Service in 1997- he launched the project "berliner theorie". He has collaborated with choreographer Marguerite Donlon (several dance productions, such as at the State Theatre Saarland) and Claas Willeke, Hannes Strobl (tamtatm, stadtmusik), Dietmar Offenhuber (stadtmusik), and many more.

Sam Auinger has created sound designs for numerous museums and exhibitions. His installations, performances and multi-media projects have been featured in film, music and art festivals throughout Europe and the USA.

Description of Style

grew up in an area where country meets city ....... here the monastery (St. Florian), there the industry (Linz, Vöest) ......... all based on Catholic tradition .......... in the church there was music (Bruckner organ) and at home a radio ........ blindfolded we played "What car is driving up the hill?" ...... a VW beetle was an easy exercise ......... my favorite toy was an iron pipe for making noise............................ thunder scared and excited me at the same time ....... I always used to fall in love with the sound of my friends' voices ................ then came the band time and it was english .......... we almost never sounded good .......... I want to be more serious, wanna get over the "tralla, tralla" ....................... then .................. engaged in composition, psychoacoustics and sound design ................ movement produces sound ....... spaces and material have a sound ................ my heart beats a rhythm ................. I wanna get close to my dreams ...............   Sam Auinger 1996

Press Reviews

25. June 2001

Is there really a song slumbering in all things and have Odland and Auinger found Eichendorff's dowser? Well, it's not that simple. It takes a long time to make these sound experiences in the green "box 30/70". It takes a lot of discipline to give sustainability to this new eco-acoustic sensitivity and to let it follow with altered social actions. Auinger knows this of course. But for him it is first about uncovering and reviving the buried ancient knowledge of the relation between sound and habitat, which Europe has possessed for many centuries.
