Description of Style

Right from the start, it is especially the elements that define Karlheinz Essl's music: the individual sound brought right up to the point, immediately interrupted by a layer of sound, like in the first bars of "met him pike trousers": exposition. These parts immediately fall into chaos; everything has lost its order.

Of course this is not quite right, as everything has its order: the first part of "met him pike trousers" is a canon of proportions designed on scaled paper; five sound characters, each marking different shape-like areas of the opened scale between point and layers, run through four orchestral layers in a precisely planned sequence. Audible: there is so much going on with the reduced basic material that those processes entering combinations and parts become the material - the music's essence. This is where Karlheinz Essl's earlier interest in chemistry meets his later thesis on Anton Webern's compositional thinking.

Essl's compositions reflect systems of an open balance beyond molecular order models. States are established, chain reactions begin, and minor impulses might tilt the order. Such "sound organisms" (Essl 1987) complying to their own laws, also blossom aside from the periodic table of the elements; for example, in "Close the Gap", where the saxophone sounds were taken from a "phonetic alphabet" and brought into form following phonologic rules. Or following the rules of music, which are analysed, broken down into parameters and re-synthesised by the computer as "real-time composition", as in "Lexikon-Sonate", enter the aspects of different topoi of piano music.
Or forms of communication, finding their analogy in "In's Offene", for example, when the four musicians agree to alternating coalitions, playing against or with one another.

Playing more: in Essl's more recent pieces, the margin has grown; it is less about well-mapped out things, but about rules leading to something unpredictable. The computer, the "composition environment", with the help of which Karlheinz Essl works out the structure of his works, becomes increasingly a "machine of inspiration" to him taking the thinking off its usual path. This was how the extreme composition "Lexikon-sonate" developed: a computer-operated piano, full of rules and structured, plays differentiated, yet unpredictable music without ending. Or even more the piece "Amazing Maze", ever-growing in cooperation with improvising musicians, an open system, structure to play. The chaos bursts through the familiar; the structural collapse is bound to happen under exact observation. Everything has its chaos.

Press Reviews

2011

Unusual ideas for sound design can be gained with the FontanaMixer by Karlheinz Essl. Essl has thus not only implemented a famous composition by John Cage - but has also extended it with an exciting dimension [...]

Beat (Tobias Fischer)

2006

[...] The saxophones turn into tubes, which produce breathing noises and fascinating, through resonance mutated, sounds, which provide the basic material for electronic processing. Essl plays with unusual noises and sounds and seems to have almost managed to take the classic sound of the saxophone out of his composition. [...]

Österreichische Musikzeitschrift (Michael Wruss)

2001

[...] The atmospheric bandwidth of the individual tracks reaches from rhythmic grooves to sizzling, chirping loops, which turn even a single metallic clicking noise into an experience. The up to 15 minute long tracks have a sure sense for musical dramaturgy in common. Essl deliberately plays with the rise and fall of the density of sound, leaves room for minute-long crescendos and never becomes blatant. Human voices keep appearing in various forms: Buddhist male choirs, female English television presenters or distorted science fiction computer voices. [...]

Jazzzeit: "Karlheinz Essl - ©RUDE" (Marie-Therese Rudolph)

8. August 1997

[...] Here, electronics does not serve the expansion of the sound spectrum, but as a language of its own, a carrier of its own aesthetics: the ensemble (flute, bass clarinet, piano, percussion) inches its way out of a misty area of aspiration to concrete musical communication. [...]

Salzburger Nachrichten (Reinhard Kriechbaum)

28. September 1995

[...] Quiet sounds, difficult play with timbre and a sense for totally different musical characters were shown in the second concert playing current Austrian music. [...] "Cross the Border", for soloist trio and soloist ensemble, composed by Karlheinz Essl on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the "Klangforum", is a Jazz inspired piece which cleverly combines the soloist voices and which had its world premiere in Frankfurt.
