Joseph Horovitz was born in Vienna in 1926 and lived until 1938 in Austria, before he was forced to emigrate with his family to England. After the Bachelor of Music at New College, Oxford, he studied composition with Gordon Jacob at the Royal College of Music in London and later with Nadia Boulanger in Paris.
Horovitz wrote 12 ballets, including "Alice in Wonderland" (1953 ), 2 one-act operas, 9 concerts (for violin, oboe, clarinet, bassoons, trumpet, euphonium, tuba, percussion, jazz-piano/harpsichord), 5 string-quartets, choral music and the oratorio "Samson", many works for orchestra and a large number of compositions for brass-bands and symphonic-bands.
Horowitz is also at home in film music: music for more than 70 television films, including 2 BBC Shakespeare dramas, series by Dorothy L. Sayers and Agatha Christie, "Search for the Nile", "Fight Agains Slavery", " Dorian Gray" and "Rumpole of the Bailey" come from his pen. In 2006 he completed the opera "Ninotchka", based on the romantic comedy film (1939).
In 1959 Horovitz received the Commonwealth Medal for composition and in 1961 the Leverhulme Research Award. Twice he was awarded the Ivor Novello Award: for the cantata  "Käpt'n Noahs schwimmender Zoo" (Best Music for Young People 1975) and "Lillie" (Best Television Music 1978). He is an honorary member of the Royal College of Music, where he teaches as a professor of composition since 1961. In 2007 he was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art I. Class. In  November 2007 Joseph Horovitz was awarded the honorary membership of the Austrian Composers' Association.
In April 2008 Joseph Horovitz received the Cobbett Medal of the Worshipful Company of Musiciansfor his achievements in the area of chamber music.
