Born in 1952. Studied composition at Mozarteum Salzburg with Josef Friedrich Doppelbauer and Hans Werner Henze in Cologne, studied conducting with Gerhard Wimberger ("Mozarteum") and Sergiu Celibidache. Opera performances in Cologne and Graz, conducted in Austria and abroad. From 1992 to 1994 he held a guest professorship for composition at the "Mozarteum", since 1995 he is a professor for composition and music theory at the University for Music and the Dramatic Arts in Graz.
He has received several prizes and awards, among which are a promotional award from the Ernst von Siemens Foundation, the Austrian promotional award for music, the Rolf Liebermann scholarship for opera composers, the Ernst Krenek Prize of the City of Vienna.

 

He has staged numerous commissions (orchestra, ensemble, chamber music, choir), at Wien Modern, Almeida Festival, Huddersfield Festival, Steirischer Herbst, Musikprotokoll, Musica Viva, World Music Days, Schleswig-Holstein-Musikfestival, Bregenz Festival, etc.
Artistic cooperation with, for example, Ensemble Modern, Klangforum Wien, Ensemble 20. Jahrhundert, RSO Frankfurt, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, Arnold Schoenberg Choir, Bavarian Radio Symphony Choir, Ulf Schirmer, Emilio Pomàrico, Friedrich Cerha, Lothar Zagrosek, Oliver Knussen, Arturo Tamayo as well as Paul Meyer, Heinrich Schiff, Stefan Vladar, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Florian Kitt, Markus Hinterhäuser, etc.

 

1985 International Rostrum of Composers of UNESCO, Paris, recommended work: Lamento e Conforto. 1988 world premier of the opera "Stallerhof" (libretto by Franz Xaver Kroetz) at the 1st Munich Biennale (further productions in Germany, Austria and Switzerland), 1999 the opera "Tod und Teufel" (libretto by Peter Turrini) at the opera house in Graz. Two portrait concerts as part of a string of concerts called "Next Generation" at the Salzburger Festspiele 2000, 2001/2002 composer in residence at the Wiener Concert-Verein (Vienna Symphonic Chamber Orchestra), 2003 Personale at the Festival Styriarte, 2005 Gerd Kühr Project (opening concert of the Musikprotokoll im Steirischen Herbst), 2006 International Rostrum of Composers of UNESCO, Paris, recommended work: Revue instrumentale et électronique.
In 2008 the world premiere of Introductio - Meditatio - Magnificat - Epilogus was held in Munich. This was followed by several commissions (Munich Radio Orchestra, Wien Modern, Vienna Friends of Music Society, brücken/kunsthaus muerz), CD-recordings and conducting engagements. In November 2011 premiere of Música Pura - commissioned by the Essl Collection for WIEN MODERN 2011.
