Through his father, who worked as an academic restorer of old musical instruments, Alexander Kukelka soon came into contact with music and music-historical contexts. He got decisive suggestions for his compositions from Rudolf Lutz (cathedral organist in St. Gallen/CH), further impetus from an encounter with Gerhard Rühm and from his cooperation with Ernst Kölz. He completed his music-studies at the Conservatory and the University of Music in Vienna.
