Born in 1958, Mitterer studied organ and composition at the University of Music and the Performing Arts Vienna and electro-acoustics at the EMS in Stockholm. As a specialist for organ and live electronics, as well as initiator of collective ensembles, such as "Pat Brothers" and "Call Boys Inc.", Wolfgang Mitterer is probably the most important innovative representative of electronic-experimental music in Austria.

 

His works range between composition and open form. Apart from music for organ and orchestra, a piano concerto and an opera, Mitterer has mainly composed electronic pieces, invented sound-installations and, in joint improvisations with various groups, developed a language of extremes, tension and complexity.

Description of Style

Years ago, the sudden self-detachment of a small sucker cup, predictable as a fact, unpredictable as a point of time, marked the beginning of a solo concert by Wolfgang Mitterer. Almost a code key to Mitterer's music. Challenge, surprise, the unexpected are linked to the poles of precision and structural thinking. Similar mechanisms - perceived in solo performance, as well as in big projects, in the collective of improvisation , as well as in composition - are hidden in a small gesture, as well as in a large-scale project. The soloist Wolfgang Mitterer accepts the challenge of permanent self-surprise against the background of familiarity. As a composer, he challenges musicians to creative musical posture, against the background of exact notation. A project for thousands of choir singers turns into a social sculpture. In the face of daily, large-scale industry studio perfectionism, Mitterer creates giant room installations, as well as electronically generated miniatures permanently attacking anything taken for granted and a merely pretended familiarity. This art's perfection lies in its musico-theoretical radical nature.
Decades ago, artists, such as John Cage and Merce Cunningham, adopted "To accept situations" as their credo, to break the monopoly of concert halls and to conquer museums, circuses or electronic space as places of art. Wofgang Mitterer is an agent provocateur for this kind of art, only that the attitude of acceptance is not enough anymore. The situation to be managed cannot only be provoked, searching for challenges has become part of the arts. The probably most significant insight gained from chaos theory research over the last years is how broad the spectrum of well-structured, but still not predictable and therefore chaos-like processes, actually is (and how narrow that of really chaotic and really predictable events is). Maybe this is the reason why Wolfgang Mitterer's music is so expressive in this sense, because musical posture, as well as compositional structure, soloing, as well as collective performance and large-scale productions explore prolific opposites: the glittering worlds of necessity without reason, the alien in the familiar, the naturalness in the uncertainty.
