Description of Style

Fritz Novotny is one of the few genuine avant-garde musicians in Austria. As a musical nomad, he moves through time, crosses cultures and captures new musical landscapes. His music and the music of the Reform Art Unit, which is formed by a group of international established musicians, is built on free improvisation. It is based on jazz and meditative musical forms, but also finds its origin in Schoenberg, Webern, Berg and Hauer.
Music, which neither denys nor emphasizes traditions, but instead, simply allows it to happen, carefully - often in a playful way - brings together, positions the representing musicians next to each other and leaving them there, without - as opposed to "world music" approaches - taking their identity in the mergence. This concept is by no means similar to post-modern ideas of looting a universal self-service shop. The musicians themselves constitute the sounding product as personified "roots", they "are" - in the best sense - the music.
The intention of my musical activity is the spontaneous composition as applied technology and philosophy, to enhance the personal potential of expression .
RAU: Starting from the sound. Ascetic and ecstatic moments alternate with silence, tonal and atonal material, with the clarity of the occidental art music. Simplicity of folkloric fragments often in the cradle of jazz or rock. Fast figures from bebop to metallic sound. The roots of the individual contributers (composers) are sometimes drained in the vibrant playing of free jazz, or in the often longbreathed European thinking. The knowledge and the ancestors of music from all periods and peoples. The fast development of a musical (architectural) structure, the emancipation of the noise, associated with sensitive tones, open space and construction. Very accurate or abbreviated, but always identical with the human existence.
My works can be interpreted over the cast (slightly modified in the 37 years) of the Reform Art Unit.
Two-thirds of the musicians came and come from classical music, including seven from the twelve-tone field. With our special work method, a third of the jazz and ethnic musicians are motivated to reinvent themselves. This makes it possible to realize a lightness and transparency, even with arranged and recorded pieces, without reducing the intensity combined with often very high musical standards. Atonal harmonies often change to functional harmonies within seconds.
