Description of Style

What I compose? Exclusively music!
Music is now more than ever characterised by a diversity of expression, stylistic characteristics, various forms of performing ... Despite this (or perhaps because of?), the genre boundaries are often drawn very tight. In my opinion there is not enough exchange - regarding both composers and performers and also listeners. I do not want to be pigeonholed.
My essential incentive is curiosity. I want to continually try out new (new for me) things, to simultaneously move around in different ways and in different directions. I do not want to dwell on a known, safe, perhaps well-trodden playground and come to a standstill .
Granted, this is a difficult and risky endeavour, but it's fun (for me and hopefully also for the musician and the listener) and at least enriches my musical experiences.
Audiences and critics (a very small, illustrious circle) have become very predictable in the so-called "contemporary music". It is relatively easy to find out how music has to "look" like (and of course sound like) to appeal to the respective event organiser, the audience, the critics, conductor, sponsor, etc.
For the most part, "contemporary" sounds and noises have deteriorated into a cliché. I therefore try to continously confront myself with other work situations and to compose for various "events" (concert music, jazz, stage music, sound installations, multimedia projects...) and different audiences (musical experience and preferences, age, social origin...), to test myself in several styles etc.
At the same time I am always careful not to deny myself. Errors, mistakes inevitably happen, but I hope to discover these more quickly and respond, correct and learn. I am forced to keep moving, keep changing and developing! Due to variety of different, subjective experiences, opinions, reviews, I hope to gradually get a more objective picture of (my) music and to find viable ways for myself.
Hannes Raffaseder, 1998

Press Reviews

[...] A brilliant programme of improvisations [...] The highlight had to be Raffaseder on recorder [...] All the works had also been meticulously thought out; well-crafted, enjoyable music was the result.
