Description of Style

Influences are varied: Rock and pop culture of the 1960s and 1970s, second Viennese school, Free Jazz, free improvisation, Cool Jazz, contemporary music (in approximately this order). For the moment, the synthesization of Jazz and European 20th century music are the focal point of my compositions, as of 1989, increased focus on contemporary music and on structural organisation of improvisation as a composition technique (Paul Valéry says: "What is not notated is nothing. What is specifically notated is dead.").

In 1994, the term "eventless music" came about: music which forgoes that which is beneficial for the dubious, superficial music business seemingly in love with progress. Music without ties, but with many points of reference; I cannot imagine it without the art of improvisation, re-awakened by Jazz, which reached a pinnacle in the suspense-filled music lacking form and tonality by Derek Bailey. I can also not imagine it without Franz Koglmann's dialectic critique on the meaning, effect and purpose of Jazz, and it is also not possible to imagine it without the enormous sound and material development of contemporary music (Cage in any case, but also especially Morton Feldman and Helmut Lachenmann are examples of this). Music to pause for a moment, to pause on the outer edge.

Press Reviews

2004

CD review: "Ereb Afrik"
Choppy piano samples are combined with tentative, threatening live piano playing, and in addition, unsettling guitar plucking tears at the nerves. In the background, quieted electronic music pulls the strings, and repeatedly shakes and strains the vibrating sound spectrum. This work allows for the expansion of musical and sound possibilities of the piano, without crudely mincing it with the electronics.

2003

Concert review - efzeg
Whirring, rustling, hissing, sizzling sound sequences, variety in graining, come undone at the beginning of a successively flickering sound wall and take on an individual form without allowing for the strictly non-idiomatic context and the collective character of the music to be questioned.

concerto (Andreas Felber)

CD review: Kurzmann, Stangl "Schnee"
Sensuous and intellectual, but without appearing artificial, Avant-garde but not seeking uninspired effects. Restrained acoustic sounds meet subliminal electronic sound effects. The silence, the space becomes an important sound medium.
