After the Second World War, he studied music in Innsbruck and graduated at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Due to a scholarship, he came to Paris and later took private lessons with Carl Orff. Since the age of 19, he headed the chamber choir "Walther von der Vogelweide" and kept his allegiance with the choir for 15 years.

His career as a journalist began at ORF Tyrol, where he headed the department of "Classical Music". He increasingly commited himself to social and political issues. So he filmed documentaries and produced radio broadcasts, in which he devoted himself to the problems of minorities and disadvantaged groups. In addition to his numerous film scores, he himself was also an actor in front of the camera. For example, in the movie "Tatort: Himmelfahrt" for which he also composed the music. In 2004, the composer, journalist, filmmaker, actor and artist passed away in his home town of Innsbruck.

Description of Style

Bert Breit is a composer of absolute music, but also functional music for radio and television, stage and film. He composes for various ensembles, from solo to symphony orchestra, also in connection with electronic sounds and noises from the work environment (for example, in his work "Tangenten"). Bert Breit loves a certain virtuosity in music, the motoric energy of fast movements, he likes dancing motion and as a contrast thoughtful depth. He knows how to combine forms and measures of contemporary music with different styles - ranging from folk music to quasi baroque to rock music. Characteristic for his music is the sharpness, contour, speed and emotion without sentimentality. The sound of his music is dissonant and expressive, incorporates the order of the overtones, whereas multi-tonality is often used in a structuring way. Bert Breit is a musician that communicates a human message. His entire compositions address social and political concerns. For him art is not to be understood as detached from life.
