Description of Style

I see a piece of work emerge with the tension between a very deep look into myself and a wide and open glance at the world. The concentration and reduction of my resources as well as electroacoustic listening experiences lie in the field of memories searching for poetic statements und unheard movements. In the compositional process - in the filtering of ideas - there are risky and radicals expressions, which I do not want to miss; they are the ones which advance to their own vocabulary.

Christian Diendorfer, 1994

Press Reviews

2001

[...] In his new piece SLEEP AND SEE, written for chamber ensemble with female voice, Diendorfer senses these movements, single words with gestures and, above all, as he insists, without mercy. Nothing is too much - Reduction of resources and an accurate analysis of the sound of the human voice, lead contrariwise to the emergence of voice and display of new sounds. Content and emotions are pursued by means of musical gestures, giving the words the required preamble, suddenly appearing in movements, transforming moments of speech into the musical continuance of the piece. An evening which showed, that in ten years, one can only hear the development of a composer if every single sound has its purpose. The pieces "Alleen" (1994), "weit fort" (1993/2000), "SLEEP AND SEE" (WP), interpreted by the ensemble "die reihe" with Walter Kobera, as well as Bea Robein (Berios "Circles") and Sandra Kreisler, gave an incredibly exciting idea of Diendorfer's work.

Österreichische Musikzeitschrift (Ursula Magnes)

30. April 2001

[...] Diendorfer breaks new ground in his most recent works, where the 44-year-old composer presents himself as a virtuous leader in emotional abysses.
It is the confrontation with the blazing life, the existential needs and the human longings, which Diendorfer emphasizes in the short piece "SLEEP AND SEE". Diendorfer has composed movements by the American artist Jenny Holzer "for chamber ensemble and female voice" and has presented a premiere in the Radiokulturhaus. Diendorfer illustrates in a very gestural and very intense (and with electronic inserts) way this "cry for help of life", which was played by the wonderful ensemble, "die reihe" and the ever-haunting Sandra Kreisler. Definitely worth hearing.

Der Kurier

12. April 2000

[...] If necessary, the ensemble provides staginess, even without the help of singers - it becomes evident with Christian Diendorfer's piece "Souffleusen". The strong gestural piece turns sounds into sounding people, and instruments appear as voices, which resonate to noise arias under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst.
