Description of Style

Peter Herbert's compositional approach entails two viewpoints. On the one hand to write music which comes from the improvisational side, which means transcribing music that one hears and transcribes oneself in an ad hoc manner as an improvising musician would, or to compose as a performer. On the other, to write music which is also fun for the performers to play, which relates to being a performer himself. The integration of improvised passages in or over composed structures is an important aspect. Influences in the broadest sense are Charles Ives, Gunther Schuller, Morton Feldman, George Crumb, Luigi Nono, Adyin Esen and Frank Zappa.
