Ruth McGuire received her first piano lessons at the age of three, and she began learning music theory and organ playing at the age of ten. From 1958 to 1962 she studied music in the USA and continued her studies after returning to Vienna at the University for Music and the Performing Arts Vienna. From 1963 to 1974 she dedicated herself to her eight children and sporadically received private harpsichord lessons. In 1979 she started studying once more at the University for Music and the Performing Arts Vienna, focusing on church music, organ, music theory, and composition. Since 1977 Ruth McGuire has concentrated on performing regularly as a soloist, accompanist and continuo player in and around Vienna. She initiated, set up and organised numerous concert series, played the organ in several Viennese churches and dedicated herself to performing world premieres of new works for the organ. Her compositions, for which she received several awards and distinctions at an early age, are performed in Austria and in other European countries.

Description of Style

In general, my works are brief and simple; they are vocal in character but dense, expressive and evocative, with a touch of melancholy. They are also "honest" (Iván Eröd). They are "free tonal", I often use an eight tone scale, made up of a one semitone, one whole tone sequence. My music is in no way experimental.
For my 'Sieben Sprüchen' for piano from 1992, on the occasion of its world premiere, I wrote (a quote about what is typical of my works): "The composition is neither virtuous nor elaborate and does not mean to impress, it is just something which is in me that I express and give shape to. My pieces are simple, short, contrasting but very expressive. I have not attempted to manipulate the material, but wanted to bring out what is in each small idea; I do not intend to apply force in any way. Harmonizing intellect and intuition is important to me."
