Herwig Reiter was born on the 26th of June, 1941 in Waidhofen/Thaya (Austria). He comes from a musical family, father (Albert) and brother (Hermann) are well-known composers. He received his first musical training at the Vienna Boys Choir. He studied music education, German and piano in Vienna. Particularly influential for him was the private lessons with Ferdinand Grossmann (vocal training). Almost none of the compositions from Reiters childhood, in which octotonic scales played a major role, have been preserved. With the start of his studies at the Vienna Academy of Music (1959) he turned to other musical activities, especially because he believed he could not contribute to the then current "serial" style. It wasn't until 1994 that Herwig Reiter returned to composing.

Description of Style

The style of his works focuses less on the avant-garde (the closest to the graphically notated music of Logothetis and sound surface compositions of Cerha and Ligeti), but is linked to the moderate modernity which he tried to develop (Britten, Henze, Rautavaara and others) further. Influences from jazz and film can also be observed in some works. Furthermore, Reiter tends to incoporate elements from earlier eras (Gregorian, polyphony, Romantic, Waltz).
