Johannes Maria Staud is among the internationally most successful young Austrian composers. Staud studied in Vienna with Michael Jarrell and Dieter Kaufmann, then with Hanspeter Kyburz in Berlin. He has completed master courses with Brian Ferneyhough, among others, co-founded the group "Gegenklang" in Vienna, and his works have been published by Universal Edition since 2000. In 2004 he received a promotional award from the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.

Nach "... gleichsam als ob ... for a large orchestra" (1999/2000), "A map is not the territory" (2001), music for piano and orchestra "Polygon" (2002), the chamber opera "Berenice", which was performed in 2004 at the Munich Biennale, at the Vienna and the Berlin Festwochen (then in a revised version in Heidelberg), were followed by further works for solo and chamber music and commissions by well-known orchestras. The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra with Sir Simon Rattle performed the world premiere of "Apeiron for large orchestra" in 2005, and on 23 July, "Segue - music for cello and orchestra" was commissioned and its world premiere was performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at the Salzburg Festival with Daniel Barenboim and Heinrich Schiff as soloists. In addition, Franz Welser-Möst and the Cleveland Orchestra have asked him to compose further orchestral compositions (2008).

Press Reviews

28. May 2009

[...] Johannes Maria Staud is a composer who uses refined measures from the range of the compositional palette, and yet maintains a very original and immediate approach to the music matter [...]

Die Presse

7. November 2005

[...] Johannes Maria Staud composed refined music in which the raw, trenchant orchestra sound is stirred up by surrounding electronic sound additions to create a seemingly visual atmosphere of self-destruction.

Mannheimer Morgen

17. June 2005

[...] The composer Johannes Maria Staud has a great talent for creating effective sounds and applying moods and instruments with precision (partly alienated by megaphones). Even the electronic additions are accurately balanced with the live playing. [...]

Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung

[...] He uses materials for composing which have become available throughout the history of 20th century and Avant-garde music, including electronically composed music. He has kept a sense for the immediacy of music - in fine nuances, as well as in violent implosions and explosions, of his music is capable of. [...]

Neue Zeitschrift für Musik (Habakuk Traber)

2004

[...] The sound palette is prepared in a loving and impressive manner. The piece gradually gains in volume, presence and instrumental aggression. It then hammers its sound theses effectively and irrefutably out to the philharmonic gate. It rolls up its sleeves, so to speak, and lets its musical muscles play. Athletic music, swelling and subsiding in the concert arena. [...]

Die Welt (Klau Geitel)

30. March 2002

Johannes Maria Staud, a young Austrian composer (born in 1974) was honoured with an award on Friday. He has an incredible sureness and his own recognizable composing style.
