Description of Style

After I had started my career as a jazz guitarist and subsequently had written a number of jazz compositions and arrangements, I am now very familiar with this musical style - in the widest sense. With time passing, I also developed a great interest in the different tendencies within the classical music of the 20th century. Ever since, I try to combine these two musical worlds in my compositions and to write music floowing the goal to bring the spirituality of jazz and the edifice of contemporary concert music to common ground. Sometimes the resulting pieces tend to be more jazzy, at other times the classical music influences prevail.

Press Reviews

2000

[...] Concert hall pieces which bring together the energy of jazz with the current means of expression of modern "serious" music in a distinct, personal way.

Österreichische Musikzeitung (Rainer Bonelli)

17. April 1993

[the The QuARTet musicians] practice vivid contemporary, European jazz, and it is not the first time Gernot Wolfgang's brilliant compositions have caused a stir.

Tiroler Tageszeitung (Martin Volgger)

There is no doubt in my mind that Wolfgang is a major composer of our times [...] Gernot continues to turn out an excellent array of some of the best music for bassoon of the 20th century.

The Double Reed (Ronald Klimko)

Wolfgang's arresting, jazz-drenched new score seemed to capture at once the realities and myths of Los Angeles during fire season [...] This piece could also serve as the score for an archetypical 1950s L.A. detective thriller - music that's somehow cool and sultry at the same time. Wherever your imagination takes you, Wolfgang provides the fuel [...]
(on: "Desert Wind")

The Los Angeles Times (Richard S. Ginell)

[...] a truly modern work which would satisfy even the most hard core audiences at the Darmstadt Festival [...] performers and audiences alike will enjoy the gripping emotionality of the piece.
(on "Reflections")

Ensemble Magazine

Gernot Wolfgang's inspiring "Common Ground", a melange of Jazz, Avantgarde and Classical elements with instant appeal [...] it's just like hearing 'Le Sacre du Printemps' for the first time once again.
(on: chamber music CD "Common Ground")
