Wright Elly

General Information

Wright grew up in the Vienna of the swinging fifties.  She spent the 1960s largely in Europe and the USA. In 1975, she married alto saxophonist Leo Wright (member of the bands of Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus and others) in Berlin. She returned to Vienna in 1981.

She received her initial training as a dancer from New York jazz choreographer Conrad Pringle.

She studied classical voice with Hope Foy in Berlin, attended jazz courses at the Berklee College of Music, Boston and with Sheila Jordan, Bobby McFerrin, Rudi Wilfer and others.



Leo Wright and Elly Wright founded the band Leo Wright & Friends!

She teaches voice.

She teaches voice in Pulawy, Poland, at Forum Alpbach, in Wiener Neustadt, in Timisoara and elsewhere.


She has collaborated with the Erwin Schmidt Trio, with which she has also recorded LPs and CDs.

Her own composition Reminiscing was included in the music documentation of the Austrian National Library in Vienna.
