Description of Style

24. October 2000

Pierluigi Billone's chamber music "Mani. Giacometti" for violin, viola and cello, would finally be an example for a kaleidoscope, most similar to the typical work concept. Billone studied under Lachenmann, a fact easily noticed. However, while Lachenmann emphasises the compositional context, Billone has a tendency to the psychedelic; for half-an-hour nothing is happening in his music. The music's entire pathos lies in the assumption that the minutest differences, which unfold in the performance of the three strings - differences between two intonations of the same thing, between grating and creaking, murmuring and whispering - would be as important as what we hear in a string quartet by Beethoven. The 30-minute piece contains many arcs, correspondences and recourses. Here, form is created mainly through the continuity of listening and the uniformity, which follows the exclusion of almost any music or sound still left in the wooden bodies of the instruments.
