General Information

Place of Birth:  Waldhausen
Region of Birth:
Country of Birth:
Nationality:

The Austrian composer and vocalist is active on the boundaries of jazz, electronics, improvised music, contemporary music, avant-garde and literature. She studied acting in Vienna, music and singing in Maastricht, Amsterdam & Los Angeles (with honours). With her Jazz/Elektronik project [koe: r] she succeeded in creating a modern art music between Jazz & Electronics that was highly praised by the media. The concept was immortalized on two records - 2008/[koe: r] & 2012/ "Susystems". The Rolling Stone magazine said: "Susystems leads straight into the realm of genius”.

Inspired by a commission for a composition for the Carinthischen Sommer 2014, Ridler has ever since been inspired by Gert Jonke's literary work and in 2016 the Jonke Society gave her the extraordinary opportunity to use unpublished texts as a source of inspiration. From these text fragments she created musical works for solo voice, chamber ensemble (in cooperation with Peter Burwik and the eXXj) and for the Jazz Trio with bassist Peter Herbert and saxophonist Wolfgang Puschnig which premiered in 2017 at the Literaturfest Salzburg and in the same year at the opening of the Bachmann Prize in Klagenfurt.

Ridler consistently takes an individual approach, searching for new forms of musical expression and developing oneself further by dealing productively with the variety of existing possibilities. Ridler is also very familiar with the development of the possibilities of the computer and uses the electronic cosmos to develop exciting new structures and sounds for her scores for the well-established instruments of a classical orchestra. Ridler repeatedly combines this meticulous work with the improvisational freedom of a vocal performer. In doing so, Ridler transcends stylistic boundaries and the conventional use of the voice. It combines popular with avant-garde and sophisticated literature.
