Description of Style

My music, when it comes to chamber or orchestral music, follows a concept that I call "Prismatic harmony". This means that the harmonic possibilities of motifs or topics are broken down into pieces and are therefore withdrawn from a functional harmonic analysis. The partial imprint of rock music, which I practiced in my youth, causes a certain emphasis on strong rhythms in straight pitches, but this is not always the case (I have a tendency to slow movements ...). As for the applied music (theater, radio plays and film music, cabaret, music and literature), I try to look at the production as a whole and to support the intentions of the author and the director. Stylistically, I hereby use e.g. songs, jazz, improvisation, alienation of instruments, noise music, use and alienation of folk music ideas and templates from Europe and the computer's audio technical possibilities. In this genre, I mostly work with my long-time partner Siggi Haider (AkkoSax). Ultimately, my compositional work also extends to jazz, free improvisation and arranging pieces for band and other ensembles in the jazz field.

Press Reviews

19. May 2004

[...] However, Hannes Sprenger loves minimalism and he developed "Drehstrom" by putting  together driving rhythmic ostinato motifs and gestures with electrifying cluster-like sounds [...]

Tiroler Tageszeitung (Markus Hauser)

24. October 2002

Sprenger's "Sturm im Reagenzglas - fünf Ereignisse für Kammerorchester" describes these events in five movements, then dealing with them in an increasingly scarce and dense way, and although the records have such handy headings like "The naked scholar" or "Farewell to Tyrol" to them, they are by no way simply illustrative. Sprenger layers his chords, but the music does not condense, he makes use of  intervals, tonality and accuracy in a relish way. He finally adds a countertenor solo [...] to his own text and timbre [...]
