Marios Joannou Elia was born on 19 June 1978 in Cyprus, studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts "Mozarteum" Salzburg in the composition class with Adriana Hölszky. In addition to this, he completed studies in guitar, music education and music theory. He extended the study of composition with Klaus Huber at the University of Music in Basel. Further suggestions by Boguslaw Schaeffer and Michael Finnissy and through encounters with artists such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Helmut Lachenmann and Georges Aperghis.
In 2001/2002 Elia became the most successful Mozarteum students. For this he received a scholarship from the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Culture. Furthermore, he was awarded the Austrian benefit scholarship for composition as well as the Rector Scholarship at the University Mozarteum.

 

One of the first international successes, during the study period, included the performance of "With a pair of scissors and threads thousand" (2002) by the Cambridge University New Music Society. Another success was achieved with the composition "Antidoron" (Holy Bread ) for electronically amplified string quartet. Therefore he received the First Prize of the prestigious Lutoslawski Award in Warsaw (2004); the performance took place at the Warsaw Philharmonic with the Rubinstein Quartet.
In recent years, Elijah got a whole list of prices. In 2007 he got the First Prize at the Edison Denisov International Composition Competition in Moscow, then the composition prize of the Theodor Körner Fonds in Vienna with acknowledgements by the Austrian Federal President, the Audience Award at the International Composition Competition in Seoul, the BMW Musica Viva Award in Munich and the First Prize of the research composition competition organized by the Mozarteum Salzburg/Klangspuren Schwaz/Ensemble Recherche. Elia received among others scholarships and composition grants from the A. G. Leventis Foundation in Paris, the Art Foundation Baden-Wurttemberg, the Academy of Arts Berlin, the European Centre for the Arts Hellerau at Dresden, the Allianz Cultural Foundation in Munich, the Hinrichsen Foundation in London, the Austrian Federal Chancellery and from the Republic of Cyprus.

 

He received invitations as a "composer in residence" to Lukas Artists House (Germany), Castle Puchberg in Wels (Austria), Visby International Centre for Composers (Sweden) and Stiftelsen Kulturhuset USF (Norway ). His academic work includes, inter alia, employment as artistic and scientific assistant at the Mozarteum in the class of Adriana Hölszky from 2003 to 2006.
