Supernova is a lively and fiery moto perpetuo for both instruments. It begins with a long arpeggiated solo for the violin, eventually joined by the tom-toms with the violin low on its powerful g-string.
The percussion then switches to marimba, where it takes over the moto perpetuo from the violin. At first the violin accompanies, but then the arpeggiated figures of the marimba take another role and accompany a melody played on the violin. As Supernova progresses, interplay between the two instruments is exploited and developed.
The work is the least experimental of Salecich's compositions and is minimalist in style. Supernova's harmonic language is also much more accessible, touching on aspects like groove music and chorus/verse structures. It is also in some ways like Salecich's m:no45227, in that it restricts the composition material, however both pieces approach this compositional technique from different angles.
Salecich's work The Preludio Before it Was for solo violin is another moto perpetuo that uses extensive string-crossing passages and broken arpeggios.
