Joseph Horovitz wurde 1926 in Wien geboren und lebte bis 1938 in Österreich, bevor er mit seiner Familie nach England emigrieren musste. Nach dem Bachelor of Music am New College Oxford studierte er Komposition bei Gordon Jacob am Royal College of Music London und später bei Nadia Boulanger in Paris.
Horovitz schrieb 12 Ballette, darunter "Alice im Wunderland" (1953), 2 Ein-Akt Opern, 9 Konzerte (für Violine, Oboe, Klarinette, Fagot, Trompete, Euphonium, Tuba, Percussion, Jazz-Klavier/Cembalo), 5 Streichquartette, Chormusik und das Oratorium "Samson", viele Werke für Orchester und nicht zuletzt auch eine große Zahl von Kompositionen für Brass-Band und sinfonisches Blasorchester.
Auch in der Filmmusik ist Horovitz zu Hause: Musiken zu über 70 Fernsehfilmen, darunter 2 BBC Shakespeare-Dramen, Serien von Dorothy L. Sayers und Agatha Christie, "Search for the Nile", "Fight Agains Slavery", "Dorian Gray" und "Rumpole of the Bailey" stammen aus seiner Feder. 2006 vollendete er die Oper "Ninotschka", basierend auf der romantischen Filmkomödie (1939).
1959 erhielt Horovitz die Commonwealth-Medaille für Komposition und 1961 den Leverhulme Research Award. Zweimal bekam er den Ivor Novello Award: für die Kantate "Käpt'n Noahs schwimmender Zoo" (Beste Musik für Jugendliche 1975) und "Lillie" (Beste Fernsehmusik 1978). Er ist Ehrenmitglied des Royal College of Music, wo er seit 1961 als Kompositionsprofessor doziert. 2007 erhielt er das Österreichische Ehrenkreuz für Wissenschaft und Kunst 1. Klasse. Am 07. November 2007 wurde Joseph Horovitz die Ehrenmitgliedschaft des Österreichischen Komponistenbundes verliehen.
Im April 2008 erhielt Joseph Horovitz von der Worshipful Company of Musicians die Cobbett Medal für seine Leistungen im Bereiche der Kammermusik.

Stilbeschreibung

 

Ich bin ein ganz reaktionärer, vom Jazz beeinflußter, fast verbissener Tonalist. Bis dahin war es ein weiter Weg.
