I favour a musical language which mainly flows from my emotional potential. I see my roots as being absolutely true to the occidental European musical tradition, though I attempt to remain open to all influences. Music is an affair of the heart which should move people.
Wolfgang Nening
17. May 1990
The guitar concert of Wolfgang Nening, born in Linz in 1966, was, from the start, a skilfully mastered consistent listening experience of the solo instrument marked in the second part with poetry played con sordino.
Linzer Tagblatt (Christiane Grubauer)
16. May 1990
Wolfgang Nening from Linz, born in 1966, with a guitar concert, whose solo part responds to the idiosyncrasy of the instrument and who creates variety through rhythmic accentuation.

[...] captivated not least at the world premiere of Erich Fried Song Cycle "von der liebe" by Wolfgang Nening. Nening's music provides rhythmically trenchant, passionate sounds and singable cantilenas to Fried's sometimes tender, sometimes erotically vibrant wonderful words.
Wiener Zeitung (Edwin Baumgartner)
13. April 1994
In Wolfgang Nening's "adagio fragile", he created a polymorphic cello solo piece, which, as indicated by the title, is broken up by pauses and in which, as well as recurring sounds, there is long-winded melodic and motivic development. On the technical side, much use is made of harmonic effects, and the performer is provided with a wide spectrum of possibilities for expression.
Wiener Zeitung (Christian Heindl)

In his Fried songs, Wolfgang Nening lets himself be led by the words of the poet. He provides not so much an interpretation as a sound carpet and creatively intervenes in "what it is". In these songs, primness and cantability form a personal, highly expressive bond. The bottom line is that one is left with a wish to get to know Wolfgang Nening better.
