Waltraud Dennhardt-Herzog on the handbook "women/music - austria" published in 2009 by Brandstätter-Verlag
As head of the Music Department of the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs it was my responsibility to spread the word of the Austrian contemporary music scene around the world and to provide the 30 Austrian cultural forums and embassies in foreign countries with background information. Based on this information, cultural forums were able to suggest and place Austrian musicians and composers at respective festivals or introduce them at their own premises.
During preparations for a major contemporary music festival in the Nordic countries, it quickly became clear that though there was a good overview of contemporary composers, the documentation of contemporary Austrian composers lacked completely.
I then decided to gather a small group of musicologists and journalists to get an overview of the currently active composers in Austria. It soon turned out that an even larger group of experts had to be consulted for such a systematic documentation. With the help and committed effort of a team of experts and in close cooperation with mica – music austria and the BMUKK, the foundation for the women's music handbook was developed in an 8-month process. Our former Head of Department, Ambassador Dr. Claudia Rochel-Laurich, supported the project from the very beginning and made sure that the appropriate funding was given for the publication.
Despite the economic crisis and cost-cutting measures, the first Austrian women's music handbook was published by the Brandstätter Verlag and presented at the Radiokulturhaus in 2009.
I would like to thank all the participants that have contributed their expertise to this publication.
I would also like to thank the president of mica – music austria, Wolfgang Seierl who supported the project as a cooperation partner, and also mica – music austria’s executive director, Sabine Reiter, who continuously updates the entries in the mica music database and in this way contributes to the well deserved publicity of female music artists.
