Die amerikanische Autorin Mary French McVicker (1949–2026) stellte im Jahr 2011 ein 253-seitiges Nachschlagewerk über Komponistinnen der klassischen Musik zusammen. Wie dem Untertitel entnommen werden kann, finden sich darin 396 Komponistinnen von 1500 bis ins 20. Jahrhundert. MacVicker schreibt im Vorwort: "A select group of male composers and their repertoires define music periods and styles. This can be misleading since only a few forged new styles. More typically, classical music has been an evolutionary process, often closely linked with the developing technology of more complex musical instruments. Most in that select group slightly redirected the path and put it on a different, angled direction. Often overlooked are the many composers who provided the fabric of much of the evolution of classical music. This book is about the women in that fabric. Of course, gender issues underlie the book, but it’s not the theme of the book. The theme is women composing music. And there were many."
